I felt it gave the novella an extra edge- the fear of the unknown. The world building is precise in it’s description making the scene easy to imagine without the need for excessive detail. I found it refreshing to be catapulted straight into the action, no initial info dump, no slow build up.īy omitting the irrelevant Lebbon has given us compact characters with enough to encourage investment whilst keeping the focus on the main event. The truth is, we don’t need any more information than this. We only know that there is a world catastrophe known as ‘The Ruin’ which provides the basis of a story revolving around six characters holed up in a Cornish mansion. If you’re looking for character backstory and an apocalyptic explanation you’ve picked up the wrong book, but that is exactly what makes this work. I’ve yet to review The Silence because I want to do it justice, and hopefully coincide with the film release.
